A common informal self-reference used by Filipinos to refer to citizens of the Philippines and their culture as well as to overseas Filipinos in the Filipino diaspora.

Example:

Ako ay isang Pinoy.
I am a Pinoy!

  • Etneb

    Derived from reversing the syllables of the word “bente,” which means “twenty” in Tagalog. It is often used to refer to a twenty-peso bill or simply the amount of twenty pesos.

    Example:

    Pahiram naman ng etneb, kulang ako sa pamasahe.
    Can I borrow twenty pesos (etneb)? I'm short on fare.

  • Churva

    A colloquial Filipino slang used as a filler word when someone can’t think of the exact term they want to use or when they want to be vague or playful. It’s similar to saying “whatchamacallit” or “thingamajig” in English.

    Example:

    Puwede bang ipasa mo yung churva diyan sa mesa?
    Can you pass me the whatchamacallit(churva) on the table?

    Hindi ko maintindihan yung mga churva na sinabi niya.
    I can't understand the stuff(churva) he said.

  • Erpat / Erpats

    A term used to refer to one’s father. It’s derived from reversing the syllables of the word father.

    Example:

    Nag-celebrate kami ng birthday ng erpats ko kahapon.
    We celebrated my dad's(erpats) birthday yesterday.
